Start with an official record, then keep the professional's role and the source's limits in view.
Use the appropriate official search
- State Bar attorney search — start here for an attorney's public profile.
- California Department of Consumer Affairs license search — covers the professions listed in its license-type menu. DCA says records show current or expired status and disciplinary actions such as suspension or revocation. Its page also lists entities that use separate systems.
Make a useful research note
- Match the full name and license or bar number. Do not combine records just because names are similar.
- Save the official URL and date checked. Read the linked source documents, not only a search-result snippet.
- Record the exact status and any effective dates. Separate a complaint or pending proceeding from a final decision.
- Identify the role performed in the specific matter. A license does not establish the scope of an appointment or the merits of a dispute.
What this check cannot establish
A matching credential does not prove service quality. A fee, association, appointment, or allegation does not by itself prove wrongdoing. Absence of a public disciplinary entry is not a review of every event in a person's career.
